By combining the technological principles of radio, wireless networking, and modems, BPL allows data to be sent over power lines and throughout buildings.

There are two basic types of BPL service:

• Access BPL - Carries broadband Internet using medium-voltage power lines to provide service to multiple sites in an area.
• In-Building BPL - Utilizes the existing power grid of a building to deliver data to every outlet throughout the building.
